Updated with Pictures of the Renovations. Summerwood Edge will be ready for the new cottage season and will now be available year round! More Pictrues to come. Summerwood Edge has undergone renovations. Please check in January 2024 for availability. Summerwood Edge is a rarity in Central Ontario - a beautiful A-frame winterized cottage on a completely private lake, surrounded by approximately 160 hectares (400 acres) of forest, and only a 30 minute drive to the eastern entrance of Algonquin Provincial Park. As the property is on an Ontario Forest Management Plan, to restore wildlife habitat, no hunting is permitted on the property, nor are power boats allowed on the lake, but there are canoes, kayaks and a row boat, as well as hiking trails, to allow exploring. The main focus of Summerwood Edge is to relax and re-energize. The open concept main floor of the cottage has a well-equipped kitchen with a large prep table, plenty of counters, fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee grinder and coffee makers. Off the kitchen there is a convenient 3 piece bathroom, and the east-facing ground level, enclosed kitchen veranda has a 2 person glider chair and a patio table and 2 chairs - perfect for having a morning coffee. The remainder of the open space has a dining table and chairs, a large slate fireplace, an HDTV, DVD player, satellite receiver, VHS player, 2 large comfortable chairs and a couch. There is a glassed-in sunporch on the south side of the cottage, with a sundeck, beside the dining area, and there is also a bedroom with a single bed off the living room on the main floor. On the west side, the main floor opens out on a large elevated deck overlooking the lake. This deck has a barbecue, several Muskoka chairs, a two person swing and a reclining lounge. For dining there is a small round table under an umbrella, but if you and your guests wish to dine al fresco, there are two long folding tables stored there, giving you a perfect place to enjoy the sunset while you eat. The second level has a complete bath, two small bedrooms with a double bed each and a larger master bedroom with a queen bed and an a HDTV The master bedroom has a large balcony facing the lake while one of the smaller bedrooms has a large balcony over the kitchen veranda.
There is also a finished walk-out basement with a fireplace, futon, a comfortable chair and an HDTV,. Beside this room is a sunny bedroom with a double bed. This level also has a 2 piece bathroom, another bedroom with two single beds. a set or bunk beds and a laundry room, and a utility room with a washer, a dryer, and the propane furnace. The basement veranda faces the lake and has several Muskoka chairs - perfect for watching a sunset or a bonfire on the shore.
For those who wish to be more active, there are 2 kayaks, 2 canoes and a row boat (no motorized vessels are permitted on Haley Lake). The lake is spring fed, so even on warm summer days, swimmers may encounter the occasional cold current. The lake bottom varies from sand to silt, with some rocks and weeds mainly on the western shore. Access to the lake is easiest beside the dock. Although there have been speckled trout caught in the lake, they tend to be evasive.
If you are less aquatically inclined there are numerous areas to hike and enjoy wildlife. Fauna include small creatures such as red and flying squirrels, chipmunks, martens, weasels, raccoons and fishers, while larger animals that have been seen include deer, moose, foxes, wolves and bears. Birds include loons, ducks, geese, herons, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, grouse, turkeys, warblers, finches and larger raptors. The mixed hardwood forest on the hill to the east of the cottage is a perfect space to practice Shinrin-yoku or Forest Bathing.
For those who feel like exploring further afield, in addition to Algonquin Park, there is the arts community of Maynooth near-by, and even further: Bancroft, Combermere, and Barry's Bay.
Summerwood Edge, a perfect spot for artists, writers, photographers, and naturalists - relax and de-stress. .

Linen, firewood (may be purchased from vendors along Hwy 62 between Summerwood Edge and Maynooth) and food are not provided but towels, pillows and blankets are. Non-shedding dogs are allowed but cats are not permitted due to allergies. Fishing in Haley Lake is poor, although occasionally speckled trout are caught. The lake is not deep but is spring fed so there are cold veins of water even during hot summers. The lake bottom varies from sand to silt to weedy. + VIEW MORE - COLLAPSE Other Town/Lake/Area: | Hastings Highlands (Maynooth) |

| My family wanted a back to nature experience following the pandemic isolation in the city. This oasis foot the bill! Hundreds of acres of unspoiled nature with a magical, cozy cabin on a mineral rich private lake with majestic loons adding their call to the peace and serenity?. We were reinvigorated and off the grid yet with every possible comfort and convenience at hand. Thank you Doug for sharing your family gem!

| Although the lake and area is great, this cottage is a very serious health risk to the public with ant and mice infestation!
There are mice droppings and ants on the floor in every room, in many cabinet drawers in the bedrooms, in the pots, pans and the dishes in the kitchen. The basement is the worst with the awful scent of mold. Mice would run by our legs while watching TV in the living room.
The owner didn't warn us about the state of the cottage before our rental period but more important, he did not take the proper measures to clean it by an exterminator! He simply left a note about it on the fridge. NOT acceptable! We kept our clothes in our lugguages and we were lucky enough to have coolers and bins for our food!
This was the worst cottage rental experience we ever had.
We do not recommend!

Owner response: I am sorry this was such a bad experience for Mme Pagé and her group. In all of our years of renting the cottage through CottagesInCanada, we have had repeat renters and this is our first negative complaint. We do take Mme Pagé's concerns seriously. Summerwood Edge is an isolated cottage under an Ontario Managed Forest Plan to restore wildlife habitat, and old growth forest. Renters are made aware, in the rental agreement, that they may experience contact with wildlife, including insects. The turn around time between renters for cleaning is 5 hours. The ants appearance in the master bedroom was surprising as we had never seen this before. All ants were vacuumed up and ant poison was put on baseboards when this was discovered. Mme Pagé purchased more ant traps and was remunerated for this expense. Due to covid protocols, all counters and surfaces are wiped with disinfectant between renters, and we follow the directions of the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Public Health Unit. This year has seen the regular cyclical increase in the deer mouse population, and we monitor this. Mouse bait has been set out in secluded areas throughout the cottage. Unfortunately if doors are left open for any period of time, mice will get in. As the cottage is fully rented for the summer, it would be difficult to have exterminators to come in between renters. Again we regret Mme Pagé's stay was not satisfactory. | |
