Welcome to The Bruce Retreat! We are located on the sheltered inlet of Long Bay on Lake Huron in Tobermory. Our guests can enjoy the calm and warmer waters of the inlet; great for swimming, fishing, kayaking and kids of all ages. The cottage is nestled among natural forest on almost an acre of land, providing a private and peaceful vacation. Finding a spot to sit and enjoy the view is very easy in our cottage! The sun-room, which faces the lake, consists entirely of windows and is furnished with comfortable seating. There is a large table to enjoy one of our many games or puzzles, or curl up and enjoy a book while listening to the sounds of the birds and water. The sun-room is also an excellent place to watch the sunset. A large 4 window with 2 slider doors leads out to the large fully covered porch which also has a beautiful view of the lake. This area is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee, watch the birds or enjoy the outdoors with shelter from the sun. For the 2020 season we added a fully screened-in area off the sliding doors, extending your outdoor time with a bug free experience. There is also a 2-tier deck at the back of the cottage which is accessible from the sun-room or family room. This is also a beautiful place to sit to enjoy a view of the forested areas that surround the cottage or to catch some rays. The main part of the cottage consists of an open concept kitchen, dining area, and large family room with a beautiful field stone fireplace. This area opens to the sun-room with over-sized French doors, each flanked with a large window. The openness and airiness of the cottage give new meaning to 'bringing the outdoors in'.
The cottage has 3 bedrooms: the master is located in the loft, has a queen bed, and is totally surrounded by walls of windows with a magnificent view of the Lake. The sounds of the water will lull you to sleep. The 2nd bedroom also has a queen bed and a large bay window with it's own view of the lake. The 3rd bedroom has bunk beds (double and single). The 2nd and 3rd bedroom are located in the main part of the cottage, allowing for some separation and privacy from bedroom 1. There is 1 very large bathroom in the cottage which has a newly renovated stand up corner shower, and lots of room for clothing, towels and personal items. The washer/dryer is located in the closet of the 3rd bedroom.
We have done our very best to provide a cottage environment that mixes the comforts of home without losing the cottage experience. New for 2024: the cottage now has Starlink satellite internet/WIFI, so there are no worries about internet connection if you need to connect with work during your stay. We have a smart TV with Netflix, a Blu-ray player, a ceiling fan in the master, 2nd bedroom and family room, and a wall oscillating fan in the 3rd bedroom. All mattresses in the cottage have a 'health guard' protector cover.
The cottage is perfectly located in Tobermory for easy and quick access into town and to all the popular destinations and activities that Tobermory has to offer. We are a 10 km drive to the town's harbour and restaurants, and a 14 km drive to Singing Sands, a gorgeous shallow entry beach that is perfect for little ones and older kids who love to boogie board. If you are new to the Bruce experience, we will have lots of information at the cottage to help you navigate your holiday.
Our fire pit is located in the front driveway area of the cottage. There is tons of room here for comfortable seating around the fire, and makes it easy to navigate into the cottage to check on little ones or grab a beverage! The star studded view of the night sky while sitting around the fire pit is amazing, as is swinging in the hammock which is located in the trees on the waterfront side. For 2020, we also added a play structure for the kids!
The cottage is available for weekly, midweek and weekend rental in the non-peak season. During the peak season (July/August) we are booking weekly only, Friday to Friday (see rates for further details).
Maximum Number of people: 4 adults, or up to 6 people if at least 2 are children (under age 16).
Dogs (only) may be permitted, but must be cleared with owners in advance. $75 fee per week per dog.
There is no smoking permitted in the cottage!
Linens and towels are not supplied (we can arrange this for International visitors only for a nominal fee).
Renters are responsible to leave the cottage clean at the end of the rental period (cleaning supplies will be provided). A fee of up to $150 will be charged if the cottage is not cleaned prior to checkout (will be deducted from your deposit).
Waterfront description: shallow entry, rocky bottom. Swim shoes highly recommended. Excellent fishing opportunities!
If you are looking for deep water swimming or prefer a gradual entry with sandy bottom, both are available within a 10-15 minute drive of the cottage and are detailed in our cottage binder.

NOTES NEW for the 2024 season: we will be charging HST NEW as of 2022: Short-Term Accommodation Fee (Municipality fee) of 4% will be added to your rental cost. This fee is part of the licensing process for all cottage rentals in North & South Bruce. E-Transfer Payments: 50% of the rental fee is collected at the time of booking. The remaining 50% and a $500 deposit is collected one month prior to the rental date. Your deposit is returned within 2-3 days of checkout or up to one week at most. Credit Card Payments: 50% of the rental fee is collected at the time of booking; the remaining 50% is collected one month prior to the rental date through credit card payment. Note: There is an 8% fee for all credit card payments, applied as follows: The Bruce Retreat applies a 4% charge on each payment (as we are charged this by Cottages in Canada), AND Cottages in Canada also then applies a 4% fee to each payment made, for a total of 8%. None of the service charges associated with credit card payment are given to/kept by The Bruce Retreat. There cannot be a return of funds through credit card, so collection and return of the $500 deposit must be via e-Transfer or cheque. Cleaning service can be arranged for a fee of $150. | This was the cottage of our dreams! The location was perfect with easy access to water, close to town, and the various park locations. The cottage had everything we could possibly need for a relaxing and fun vacation. All the information and communications from the owners was detailed and helpful--they are wonderful hosts! We highly recommend staying the Bruce Retreat while in Tobermory and looking forward to our next visit.

| We had a wonderful week here at The Bruce Retreat! The cottage is very well appointed - had everything we needed and more! Enjoying coffee in the screened in porch each morning while listening to the birds and the waves of Lake Huron beyond the inlet was the perfect way to start our day's adventures! The cottage was clean and very comfortable. Janet was quick to respond to any questions we had. We are totally relaxed and sorry to have to leave but certainly look forward to another opportunity to enjoy this piece of heaven again!

| We had a great stay here! It was very comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Great view of the lake from the upper bedroom! It was very spacious for our family and we loved that it was well stocked with games/puzzles/movies for rain days to keep everyone occupied. The water is shallow and warm in front of the cottage and the kids enjoyed the kayaks and paddle board. We are looking forward to stay again and many of our friends and family also want to book here as we have talked highly about it. Very good location as well.
