Serendipity Cottage is a place to 'get away from it all'!

Whether on a rainy or sunny day, the huge covered deck allows you to rest and relax and take in your surroundings. The tall trees are home to several bald eagle families and we have counted over 60 eagles (mature and immature) on the beach at one time. Sitting on the cottage deck and watching an eagle soar and glide by is truly breathtaking! Other wildlife includes deer that wander onto the property with their young, grazing peacefully for all to watch, and hummingbirds 'dart' back and forth and stop to hover and catch a drink of sugar water from the feeder.

The beach, while rocky, does not seem to be a hindrance. In fact, under each overturned stone lie more interesting sea creatures to discover. The view from the beach is breathtaking. Off in the distance one can see the mainland of BC and cruise ships gliding by on their way to Alaska. Closer to shore are the islands of Chrome, Denman and Hornby (little Hawaii). Make sure to bring your binoculars so you don't miss out on the seals, sea lions, sea otters and whales. In the evening kick back for a great beach fire and 'smores' and lovely sunsets.

Activities:

Within walking distance down a tree 'draped' lane is the community of Bowser. It has a 'well-stocked, reasonably priced' grocery store, gift shop/dollar store, gourmet coffee shop with delicious baked goods and lunches, a public library, and a gym. Once you arrive at Serendipity Cottage, you won't want to 'go into town' to get groceries, etc. and you won't have to! If you do want to go 'further afield', great places to explore include Horne Lake and caves, numerous walking and hiking trails, Farmers markets, Coombs, Qualicum Beach, Englishman River Falls, and Cathedral Grove.

We just came back from the most relaxing holiday spent in this awesome cottage. It's absolutely full of West coast charm. A Very comfortable home away from home. Secluded in the rainforest with easy access to pretty well everything. I love cooking and with the condiments that were available, I was able to make some marvelous meals right there. A quick drive up to the fish monger and home to cook. Yum!! I didn't have to worry about dishes, cutlery or anything.
We were there when the rains came and it was so lovely. Big deck condusive for coffee in the morning and reading in the afternoon, protected from the rain. A view of the ocean that was a quick walk away. First thing in the morning you go out to only the sounds of the wild. Loons on the ocean, the surf, and occasional cry of an eagle. Add to that the smell of the cedar, the ocean, and wood crackling in the fireplaces around........
Okay, so seriously! How idyllic can it be?
Chris, the owner, has been so helpful throughout the process. She walked us through it with ease. And if we had any questions, she was always available for a call. I like to think of her as family now.
Oh my yes! We are planning on going back!

Owner response:
Wow! Given the weather did not co-operate as we had hoped (more rain than sun), it was nice to hear that you got to enjoy the 'coziness' of the cabin. A saying comes to mind that it sounds like you and Al were as 'snug as a bug in a rug'!
This is my 1st review when the weather was not at its best, so it is nice to know that you enjoyed it so much.
Chris

I had the most amazing time on Serendipity Cottage! This place easily felt like home. I was supposed to stay there only for the weekend and here I am now leaving after 4 nights. The first day I got welcomed with the friendly neighbor's cat "Ziggy". I got to meet friendly and fun neighbors as well. I had magical beach walks (especially at sunset). I got to see deers, bald eagles, herons, and sandpipers. I heard the woodpeckers, I spent wonderful starry nights out on the deck. I also had the best sleep in a long while. Thank you Chris for the wonderful retreat and for all the nooks and crannies (Taco Shack, Cone Zone, Just like mom's bakery, French Creek) that you shared with me. I will definitely come back again and bring more family and friends.

Thank you for the lovely response! While our cottage is more like a 'home away from home', we do our best to accommodate our guests and hope that they enjoy our cottage as much as we do! Chris

The cottage is not set up for rental guests as no cupboard space is available for any food you might bring. We ended up having to put our supplies on any available surface we could find. The fridge contained food and the freezer was full. The cabin is not child friendly as there was far too much clutter everywhere, as there is so much clutter some surfaces are not clean. The dining table had an assortment of items on it, making it difficult for the five of us to use it. Practically every surface in the cabin has something on it. The wardrobe in the main bedroom had some items of clothing in it. We found a folder with information on the cabin a couple of days into our stay on the dining table. The owner does not allow pets, but don't take this as it being pet free. The outside chairs were covered in dog hair, I sat on a chair and my clothing was covered in a lot of dog hair. I had to clean the dog hair off both chairs just in case someone else sat on them. This put me off sitting on the chairs. Anyone with pet allergies would have a problem staying in this cabin as it is not pet free. All in all we liked the site, but would not stay in this particular cabin again.

Owner response:
Dear Bronwen,
I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at our cottage. I would agree that there may appear to be 'limited' cupboard space as the kitchen is better stocked with kitchen items than most rental properties. As for the fridge we do leave condiments for our 'guests' use' as many people do not come well equipped with these items and seem to appreciate it. Our cottage is available for families, but we have never advertised it as 'child proof'. Our cottage is not your 'typical' rental property as we want our guests to enjoy 'our home away from home' and past renters have often commented on its coziness. As for pets, we do not rent to people with pets as we have had negative experiences in the past. That is not to say that people who are visiting may visit with pets out on the deck. I will mention your concerns to our cleaner as we do expect that the cleanings are thorough when completed. We will take your comments into consideration and hope that your next experience is to your satisfaction.
Sincerely,
Chris Varney

We thoroughly enjoyed experiencing Vancouver Island and coming 'home' to this beautiful little cottage each day. Early morning walks along the beach, short walks to the local coffee shop and other shops/amenities were a great start to each day. Driving proximity to many areas of interest around the Island added to our enjoyment. An added bonus with dinner our first evening at the Ship & Shore restaurant in nearby Deep Bay - great people and great food!
Thanky you to Chris for an easy and great experience - from initial contact through to the end of our stay.

Thank you for your kind comments, Denise. Hopefully you can get back to the Island one day again soon. The Ship and Shore has recently changed owners, so we will have to take you up on your recommendation next we are out!
Chris

We came as guest from Europe and enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage contains all you need to make your stay comfortable, we did not miss anything. The location is beautiful: beach is close-by, wildlife all around (deer, rabbits, squirrels), and it is a good starting point for outdoor adventures. Communication with the owner, Chris, was very nice - she provided us with loads of tips and hints what to do, was always approachable, and always replied in almost an instant.

Thank you, Markus. It was a pleasure to talk to you and help you out whenever the need arose. You and your family were very easy to deal with. Hope to cross paths again one day soon.
