"Sekani" is a cottage situated on a point in Georgian Bay with water on three sides and spectacular views in many directions. Every room in the house, except the bathrooms, has a view of water. The main rooms in the house have floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, while the bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows.
*** At this point, all available weeks in 2023 have been taken by renters from previous years who want to return. Rates and availability for 2024 will not be known until Feb 2024 or so. All summer renters from 2023 have already indicated they wish to return in 2024, so it is unlikely that there will be a free week in July or August for someone new. However, there might be a free week in June or September. If you would like to be added to the waiting list in case a week becomes available, send an inquiry. ***
Please note that the cottage is surrounded by water and wilderness, and that there is no road to the cottage. Access is by boat from a marina about 10 minutes away by boat. A water taxi will take the renter to and from the cottage at the start and end of the rental period. While at the cottage, the renter can use the provided outboard boat or kayaks or sailboat to get around, or can use the water taxi service.
The cottage is mostly rented to a number of families that come back year after year. Some of them have said they are willing to act as references to potential renters. Contact the owner if you would like to speak with one of them. Some reviews are also available on another popular cottage rental website.
Detailed Description
The house was designed by noted Toronto architect Jeff Armstrong. The living and dining rooms of the house are a single large space with rough-cut split cedar paneling and cathedral ceiling. The living room is sunken with two small steps separating it from the rest of the house. The north-east corner of the living room is almost completely glass and provides spectacular views in many directions.
The master bedroom suite consists of a master bedroom, a library/study and a master bath. The master bedroom juts out from the rest of the house and has windows on three sides with beautiful views. It contains a queen-sized bed, two comfy chairs, large set of drawers, and two large closets. The library/study, which can double as a fifth bedroom, contains a desk and sofa and lots of books. The sofa pulls out into a firm comfortable queen-sized bed.
A large back hallway with a large skylight provides access to three additional bedrooms and two half-baths. Bedroom #1 contains a queen-sized bed. Bedroom #2 contains a bunk bed with a single on top and a double/queen on the bottom. It also has a pull-out cot which is suitable for younger children. Bedroom #3 contains a queen-sized bed. There is also workbench with tools and two large linen closets.
At the end of the hall is a game room. The game room, with three large floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, can either be set up with a table for breakfast and games, or can be set up with a ping pong table stored in a nearby closet.
The kitchen is located in the center of the house with a large skylight and a large window and a glass door on one side that look through the game room and out to the water. The kitchen is equipped with a smooth-top stove/oven, two large refrigerators, a dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, two coffee makers, as well as platters, mixing bowls, baking items, etc etc etc.
A large deck with BBQ and deck furniture is on two sides of the house. A smaller deck is on a third side.
The boathouse is located about 100 m away from the main house. This is where the kayaks, sailboat and outboard boat are stored.
The house sits on 9 acres of land with 3500 ft of irregular shoreline with three large points and a number of smaller points. The property consists of mostly smooth open rock near the shore, and a forest in the interior (mostly the typical wind-swept Georgian Bay pine made famous by the Group of Seven). The property and surrounds are heaven-on-earth for a geologist. The ponds immediately to the east of the cottage are a popular spot for frogs, and many kids have spent hours frog hunting here. The irregular shoreline provides many different spots to go swimming, with each spot having its own character. About 10-15 mini-islands ("reefs") immediately off-shore in various directions provide interesting swimming destinations. One is known as the "jumping rock" because it has a fun place for kids to jump into the water. It is possible to go "reef-hopping" along a chain of these mini-islands.
There is quite a bit of wildlife around. Frogs and loons can be heard almost every night at the right time of year; ducks, seagulls and hawks are often seen; a small inland lake on the property is popular with beavers; and there is a local colony of trumpeter swans (released as a trial re-introduction by the Ministry) which one occasionally sees.
American Camp Island, a Georgian Bay Land Trust Island open to the public, is located about 1 km west of the property across the water. This island is notable because of its flat open rock (think tennis court flat) and is a popular spot for picnicking. On one side is a 5 m cliff overlooking deep water which is a popular jumping spot. This island is easily reachable from Sekani using kayaks, sailboat or outboard.
There are also lots of islands and reefs nearby that provide interesting small boat destinations. There is another Georgian Bay Land Trust island and a Georgian Bay Islands National Park island, both about 3 km away in different directions. Contact the owner for other ideas for an active holiday.
Though there are a number of other cottages visible across water, there are no cottages that one can easily walk to, and the feeling at the property is one of privacy and relaxation.
