I am disappointed to read this feedback as it was never raised throughout your stay or communicated to me after. It's our goal to meet everyone's needs.
I am taken aback to hear that it was uncomfortable and did not provide privacy and you wanted to leave after the first night; on the contrary, your wife had emailed Saturday afternoon, the 3rd night of your stay to thank me for the accommodations to request a full day extension to your stay.
Had you raised your concerns and desire to leave, you would have been provided a fair return of monies. We pride ourselves in being fair and reasonable in every circumstance and making everyone's stay enjoyable.
Your encounter with the Owner is unfortunate and seems a unique set of circumstances. You indicate it was late Thursday night when others arrived. Keeping in mind you were clear that no one else would be at the cottage on the first night. Initially, I provided a cost for 3 nights, which you responded not having the budget. I responded with option for you to stay 2 nights within your budget. You asked for 3 nights at a reduced rate because it would only be you the first night and arriving late. The Owner accommodated your request with a considerable reduction for the 3 nights on your word. You said that was fair. You then had all the guests arrive that night. Full price should have been paid if this was the intent or like others in past a notification that plans changed and a fair price.
The Owner provides full privacy to the guests. When guests require assistance the Owner is always helpful and friendly, helping with boat launches, inflating toys, etc. Guests have had positive feedback and have liked that there is someone to assist if anything is required. In the 10+ years of renting the cottage, there's never been an issue or negative encounter.
As you noted, it has a beach and a clear and gradual entry - unique to this property. We have no control over the bottom of the lake. You'll find other properties have no gradual entry unless rocky or extensive weed.
The checkout/in times are on the website and contract. The time is to fit the cleaning schedule, reliable and competent cleaner is difficult to find.
Requests for extra hours at check-in/check-out are accommodated for no additional cost if it's vacant. We would have done the same for you; but your wife's request was asking only for a cost to stay until 5pm (a full day) not a couple of hours. It seemed reasonable to her there would be a fee.
Thank you for taking the time to bring this to my attention. I will speak with the Owner and request he contact me directly to address any concern with guests in future. We do our best to provide a positive experience. I do hope you find somewhere that is more suited to your needs.
